Returning My Focus to IT Support and Service Desk
Why I am focusing my next career step on IT Support, Service Desk and hands-on technical troubleshooting, and how my previous technical and customer-facing experience supports that direction.
Choosing a clear direction

My background in technology has covered several different areas. I completed a Bachelor of Computer Engineering, later completed a Master of Information Technology specialising in Network & Information Security, and previously worked in Level 1 technical support within an internet service provider environment.
Since moving to Australia, much of my professional experience has been outside a traditional IT role. I have worked in large customer fulfilment operations and progressed into leadership responsibilities. Rather than trying to present that period as something unrelated to technology, I now see that experience as an important part of what I can bring back into an IT environment.
Why IT Support
The area I am currently most interested in is IT Support and Service Desk work. I enjoy the practical side of identifying a problem, gathering information, working through possible causes and helping a user reach a solution. It also combines technical knowledge with communication, patience and prioritization.
For me, this is also the right place to rebuild strong hands-on experience within the Australian IT industry.
Technical foundations I already bring
- Computer Engineering education
- Network and Information Security postgraduate study
- Previous Level 1 ISP technical support experience
- Internet and router troubleshooting exposure
- Understanding of networking fundamentals
- Technical problem solving
- Application and software testing exposure
- Current hands-on web application development
Skills from operational leadership
Working in operational leadership has developed skills that are directly useful in support environments. Technical knowledge alone does not make someone effective at helping users.
- Communicating clearly under pressure
- Prioritizing multiple issues
- Working with different teams
- Escalating problems appropriately
- Supporting customers and team members
- Taking responsibility for outcomes
- Following processes while responding to unexpected problems
These are behaviors I want to combine with stronger hands-on technical capability as I move into my next role.
What I am working on now
My current focus is on refreshing the practical skills most relevant to entry-level and early-career IT Support roles. This includes Windows and user support, networking fundamentals, troubleshooting methodology and technical communication.
I am also continuing to build practical projects so that my learning is supported by evidence rather than simply adding technologies to a skills list.
The next step
My immediate goal is straightforward: earn an opportunity in IT Support, Service Desk, Desktop Support or a related technical support environment where I can contribute, continue learning and build stronger professional IT experience. Longer term, my education in networking and information security gives me areas to continue developing toward, but right now my priority is becoming strong at the fundamentals.
